Boygenius rocked the stage with two acoustic sets last night at the Smell, nestled in the heart of downtown Los Angeles. It was a night to remember. They dropped a bombshell during the performance, saying, โWeโre going away for the foreseeable future.โ Fans were left in a whirlwind of emotions as Boygeniusโ reps confirmed to Pitchfork the group is hitting pause.
Phoebe Bridgers, Julien Baker, and Lucy Dacus, the trio behind Boygenius, came together in 2018. They quickly made waves with their self-titled debut EP. Since then, they’ve each explored solo ventures: Bridgers with her 2020 album *Punisher*, Baker with *Little Oblivions* in February 2021, and Dacus releasing *Home Video* in June 2021. Each album reflected their unique talents and musical journeys.
Last year marked Boygenius’ grand comeback with *The Record*, alongside a companion EP, *The Rest*. Their return wasn’t just a blip on the radar; it was monumental. *The Record* snagged nominations for Album of the Year, Best Alternative Music Album, and Best Engineered Album, Non-Classical, at the 2024 Grammy Awards. Their single โNot Strong Enoughโ was in the running for Record of the Year and Best Rock Performance, while โCool About Itโ eyed the Best Alternative Music Performance prize. The Grammys are set for a glittering ceremony on Sunday, February 4, in Los Angeles.
In the midst of all this Grammy buzz, *The Record* landed at No. 16 in โThe 50 Best Albums of 2023.โ Meanwhile, โNot Strong Enoughโ found its spot at No. 32 in โThe 100 Best Songs of 2023.โ And if you’re craving more Boygenius content, Jill Mapesโ review of their Madison Square Garden concert is a must-read.
