Dean Wareham is gearing up to release a new album called That’s the Price of Loving Me, set for March 28 under Carpark.
This album has ten tracks and brings Dean back together with Kramer, who produced Galaxie 500’s last album way back in 1990. Before the full release, Dean dropped a song titled “You Were the Ones I Had to Betray,” featuring a music video directed by Sylvie Lake and starring his wife Britta Phillips. Plus, he’s going on tour in April and May—details are down below.
Wareham’s latest solo project is his fourth one, though he’s also known for playing with Luna and Dean & Britta. The recording took just six days in Eagle Rock, Los Angeles, where Kramer was joined by Phillips, Anthony LaMarca, Roger Brogan on drums, and cellist Gabe Noel to bring these songs to life.
“Kramer insisted that I play all the guitars on this record,” Wareham shared. “And we worked quickly. Kramer believes that two takes yield more treasure than twenty, and he always seems to have the song mapped out in his head right away.”
Kramer chimed in: “34 years is a long time. But I love Dean; it was worth the wait.” He felt like no time had passed between them when they started working again. “When the work was done,” he said, “I felt like it couldn’t have been better.” There’s something magical about revisiting old partnerships—a rare feeling that’s hard to replicate elsewhere.
The lead single “You Were the Ones I Had to Betray” came together at the last minute while Dean pondered how love can sometimes lead us astray into betrayal territory unexpectedly—Gabe Noel’s cello really shifted its direction musically.
Fans often wonder how artists come up with such unique sounds so quickly.
The previous studio album from Wareham was I Have Nothing to Say to the Mayor of L.A., released in 2021. He also made a holiday album with Phillips and Sonic Boom called A Peace of Us. And if you’re into nostalgia trips: last year brought us some lost Galaxie 500 tunes from their early New York days!
