Ekko Astral, a punk band from D.C., is joining forces with the Gender Liberation Movement to bring a fresh music and arts festival called Liberation Weekend to Washington D.C. on May 30 and 31.
“The reason we’re putting this event on is simple: artists of all genders and genres should stand in vocal support of the trans community,” said Jael Holzman, the leader of Ekko Astral. “If you stand for freedom of expression, you support trans rights. If you believe in loving your neighbor, you support trans rights. Music is humanity’s most universal language—and we need our best artists to come together in support of our community now before it’s too late.”
This festival will not only feature Ekko Astral but also Home Is Where, Ted Leo, Speedy Ortiz, among others. Money raised will help fund Gender Liberation Movement’s rallies against anti-trans actions and laws. There’s going to be an afterparty with dancing and a special “showcase” featuring Red Hot Organization’s Transa compilation with L’Rain, Bartees Strange, and Asher White performing.
We believe that when people unite through music for a cause like this one, it’s truly inspiring.
The band will also hit the stage at Pitchfork Music Festival London and Paris later this year.
