During Kendrick Lamar’s Super Bowl LIX halftime show, a performer was taken into custody for displaying a flag that combined Sudanese and Palestinian symbols.
The unexpected protest caught both the NFL and Roc Nation off guard. The New Orleans Police Department is figuring out what charges might apply. The performer had hidden the flag on themselves, revealing it dramatically while standing on a prop car near the show’s end. The NFL mentioned that nobody involved in organizing the event knew about this plan, and now this person is banned forever from all NFL events and stadiums. Interestingly, the flag didn’t appear on TV.
Meanwhile, there were plenty of other surprises during Lamar’s performance. He made references to Drake’s lawsuit over “Not Like Us,” brought Serena Williams—Drake’s former flame—onstage as a dancer, and got everyone singing along to some of his most biting lyrics.
