Pharrell Williams Halts Michel Gondry’s Musical Biopic

Pharrell Williams has decided not to move forward with a musical film about his life called Golden.

In a statement, Pharrell and Michel Gondry, who was going to direct the movie, explained that they couldn’t find a way to tell the story as they had hoped. They thanked everyone involved in making the film and mentioned their excitement for future projects with Universal. The movie was fully shot and featured famous names like Halle Bailey, Missy Elliott, Janelle Monáe, Da’Vine Joy Randolph, Anderson .Paak, and Quinta Brunson. It was supposed to be about Pharrell’s childhood in Virginia Beach during the ’70s and celebrate Black culture and happiness.

Fans sometimes wonder why good ideas don’t always work out.

Universal Pictures, which worked on Golden, is expected to lose around $20 million because of this decision. Interestingly enough, last year Focus Features—a part of Universal—released another movie about Pharrell called Piece by Piece, where Lego figures told his story instead.
