Rufus Wainwright is really upset because Trump used his version of “Hallelujah” during the event. Wainwright supports Kamala Harris and thinks it’s totally wrong for Trump to use the song. He said using the song this way is like disrespecting something sacred.
According to Wainwright, Leonard Cohen’s “Hallelujah” stands for peace and truth. He feels lucky to be associated with such a powerful message. Watching Trump and his fans enjoy it felt like a huge insult. Even though he doesn’t agree with their actions at all, he hopes that maybe listening to the song might make Trump feel sorry for his past actions—but he’s not expecting much.
The people who manage Leonard Cohen’s music have told Trump’s team to stop using the song through a legal letter. The rally got even weirder when two people fainted from the heat! They also played Sinead O’Connor’s cover of “Nothing Compares 2 U,” and her estate called Trump a “Biblical devil.” Oh, and they also played “Memory” from Cats.
