Stephen Malkmus has started a fresh band called the Hard Quartet.
In this new project, he’s teamed up with Emmett Kelly, Matt Sweeney, and Jim White. All four of them sing and play instruments like guitar and bass. Jim White also handles the drums for the group.
Emmett Kelly leads the Cairo Gang. He’s part of the C.I.A. with Ty and Denée Segall, and he plays in Double with Jim White. He has collaborated a lot with Bonnie “Prince” Billy and Angel Olsen.
Matt Sweeney is famous for being in Chavez. In 2021, he worked again with Bonnie “Prince” Billy on an album called Superwolves. He was also featured on Stephen Malkmus’ solo album from 2020 named Traditional Techniques.
Jim White co-founded Dirty Three, who put out an album recently titled Love Changes Everything. Besides that, he’s active in his duo Xylouris White. In 2024, he released a solo record called All Hits: Memories, as well as a collaboration album with Marisa Anderson named Swallowtail.
