The Cure have released their new song “Alone,” and their first album in 16 years, Songs of a Lost World, is coming out on November 1.
Robert Smith teamed up with Paul Corkett at Rockfield Studios in Wales to produce the album, which has been eagerly awaited. The band will share the tracklist soon on their website and social media. You can listen to “Alone” below and check out the album cover as well.
In a press release, Robert Smith said that “Alone” was the key to unlocking the rest of the album. He shared, “The track that unlocked the record; as soon as we had that piece of music recorded I knew it was the opening song, and I felt the whole album come into focus. I had been struggling to find the right opening line for the right opening song for a while, working with the simple idea of ‘being alone’, always in the back of my mind this nagging feeling that I already knew what the opening line should be… as soon as we finished recording I remembered the poem ‘Dregs’ by English poet Ernest Dowson… and that was when I knew both song—and album—were real.”
The journey to make this follow-up to 2008’s 4:13 Dream started back in 2019. That year, Smith mentioned they had recorded 19 songs meant for two albums. He told Rolling Stone, “We’ll finish [an album] before we start [touring] in summer, and it’ll be mixed through summer.” However, he later admitted he was behind schedule but would be very upset if they didn’t release something in 2019.
Avoiding past mistakes, he kept things quiet until early 2020 when he decided not to rush things again. Fast forward to 2022: The band teased Songs of a Lost World and added new tracks like “And Nothing Is Forever” and “I Can Never Say Goodbye” during live shows. Both songs are planned for a live single release this November.
Fans really appreciate how much effort goes into creating such meaningful music .
