Vampire Weekend had quite the weekend, taking over the SiriusXMU channel. It was all to celebrate their latest album drop, Only God Was Above Us. They weren’t just there to play their new tunes, though. Nope. They also brought in some friends for a special session. With Amber Coffman and violinist Ray Suen by their side, they covered Grateful Dead’s “Peggy-O.” And let me tell ya, it was something else. They even threw in some acoustic versions of their new songs for good measure. You’ve gotta see their “Peggy-O” rendition.
Only God Was Above Us marks Vampire Weekend’s fifth studio adventure. It’s packed with singles like “Mary Boone,” “Capricorn,” “Gen-X Cops,” and “Classical.” Oh, and they’ve started a podcast, Vampire Campfire. It’s pretty cool – the band dives into the album’s creation and the stories behind the songs. A little behind-the-scenes action, if you will.
This past Monday, April 8, was a big day for the band. They played a special show in Austin, Texas, right during the solar eclipse. Talk about timing, right? And just last night, they were jamming out with Goose at the Capitol Theatre in New York. They played “Gen-X Cops” and went all out with a 31-minute rendition of “Cape Cod Kwassa Kwassa.” You should definitely check out that performance.
In other Vampire Weekend happenings, they popped up on The Daily Show for a chat and a performance of “Mary Boone.” Worth watching, for sure. And for those of you who like to dive deep, their albums Contra and Modern Vampires of the City made Pitchfork’s list of “The 200 Best Albums of the 2010s.” Just throwing that out there, in case you’re curious.
